This investigation was addressed to two hypotheses, first,
that increased dietary sodium chloride is associated with an in-
creased incidence of clinically significant elevation of blood pres-
sure, and second, that the Negro in the Southern United States who
exhibits a higher incidence of high blood pressure might do so by
reason of a higher salt intake.
A significant Negro-white difference was found for bucket
collection dietary sodium intake, with whites having the higher value.
