In announcing the grants, which totaled more
than $1 million, Richard L. Gelb, chairman of
Bristol-Myers, said, "The purpose of this new pro-
gram is to help improve knowledge of the role of
nutrition not only in maintaining human health
but in restoring it.
"These grants reflect Bristol-Myer's commit-
ment to the nutritional sciences and their growing
importance in medical education and practice.
And they represent one way we can support some
of the promising work that is going on and perhaps
stimulate new and productive approaches to the
Bristol-Myers
cure and prevention of illness in people of all
ages," Gelb added.
Awards Grant for
Last fall, Greene was awarded a $1.5 million
grant by the National Institutes of Health to
establish a Nutrition Research Center at Vander-
Nutrition
bilt. The Bristol-Myers grant is the first major
grant the center has received since it opened in
January.
Research
The Bristol-Myers Company recently awarded
Harry Greene, M.D., professor of pediatrics and
associate professor of biochemistry, a $150,000
grant for nutrition research.
The grant will be used to explore ways to com-
bat the severe nutritional problems of premature
infants, caused by immature intestinal function
and lack of nutritional stores at birth. The grant
will also help support ongoing studies of under-
nutrition associated with four illnesses in chil-
dren and adults: malignancy in the lung and leu-
kemia; kidney disease requiring dialysis; diseases
requiring extensive abdominal surgery; and
chronic liver disease.
Vanderbilt was one of five American institu-
tions receiving the three-year, unrestricted grants.
