SUBJECT: G14-9A and G19-33A Materials Handling Update to Specifications
OBJECTIVE: Amend Short term Material Handling guidelines for G14-9A
BACKGROUND: G14-9A is produced at CRES Tobacco and its current usage, after blending
with G19 at Tobaccoville Diet Operations, is in Turkish Gold and Camel Special Lights products.
The storage policy for G14-9A has from the outset been:
Immediate Cold Storage of G14-9A after production at CRES Tobacco (per PN-96-
18R2).
Excess G14-9A should be shipped back to Cold Storage as soon as possible after
G19-33A blending at TV.
Testing was conducted in August 2000 to assess the impact of short term storage (< 30 days) at
plant Temperature/RH for G14-9A stored in cans. Data from this testing (TPD 752) is attached.
The test results indicate that product NH3 content is nominally unchanged after 30 days in plant
versus current product (stored initially at Cold Storage and called out as required).
Allowing G14-9A to be canned out at CRES Tobacco (vs. boxing) and stored/used in < 30 days
at Tobaccoville Diet Operations would provide five (5) benefits:
Neither operation is currently staffed for Boxing/un-boxing operations. At the current
requirements level this is managed through employee re-assignment. At higher volume
levels, additional staffing could be required.
. .
Eliminates current cost for boxes (one time use).
Eliminates handling cost charge from cold storage.
Reduces trucking cost
Fresher product will be used in normal production.
To facilitate G14-9A usage in < 30 days, CRES Tobacco will produce G14-9A in smaller lot
sizes, approximately every other week, as ordered by Production Planning. There will be no
additional line cleaning costs at CRES Tobacco versus current nor impact on product quality
parameters as a result of this proposal.
