That professional and voluntary national organizations interested in com-
batting malnutrition be encouraged by the USAIDs and the their professional
journals be adequately supported.
9. That the War on Hunger Office take over the support of nutrition surveys of
the type carried out for many years by the ICNND and that a follow-up on the
recommendations of these surveys be anticipated and made part of the project
agreement with the host country. It is further recommended that the information
elicited by these surveys be popularized and, whenever needed, translated into
the language of the country for dissemination by the local press.
10. In order to increase the awareness of the population, it is recommended that
programs involving nutrition rehabilitation centers, mother craft centers, and
activators be encouraged by the USAIDs. That the Office of War on Hunger pro-
vide the USAIDs with information regarding such programs and place at the dis-
posal of the USAIDs documents allowing Missions to reap the benefits of previous
experiences in these programs. It is further suggested that the possibility of
using local people as an indigenous Peace Corps be thoroughly explored and that
wherever possible the new type of local Red Cross personnel be used.
11. The War on Hunger Office include in its program procedures that would
bring nutrition information to the people of developing countries; that said
Office evaluate and inventory existing material and consider supporting the
writing of textbooks for school education in nutrition geared to local re-
sources and foods.
12. That synoptic resumes of information pertaining to the state of nutrition
in countries of AID interest be written up and disseminated to AID personnel in
those countries and to relevant personnel from the host country government
staffs.
