The annual average number of deaths among Indians from five causes for which the
Indian rate is substantially higher than the rate for all races, and the number of deaths
which would have occurred if the rates for the whole country had prevailed among Indians
are shown in table 2a, and. in the figure on page 2 of chapter I. The excess of actual
over expected deaths from these five causes is almost 1, 400 deaths. For accidents,
influenza and pneumonia, tuberculosis, and diarrheal diseases the ratio of actual deaths
to expected deaths is well over two.
