THE SPECIAL SUPPLEMENTAL FOOD PROGRAM FOR
WIC focuses
WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN (WIC) provides specified
nutritious food supplements to pregnant and postpartum women,
on the prevention
and to children under five who are determined by qualified health
of growth problems
professionals (physicians, nurses, nutritionists, or other health
officials) to be at nutritional risk, as defined by the medical
and mental retardation
criteria on the following pages.
To receive the foods, a person must live in an area covered by a
WIC agency and be eligible for free or reduced cost health services.
You as a health care professional can make referrals by sending the
person to the local WIC program site with a note or letter from
you stating the medical criteria that qualify the person.
IN ORDER FOR THE PATIENT to be certified the WIC agency
THE WIC PROGRAM is funded and administrated at the
needs information such as:
national level by the US Department of Agriculture and is
operated at the state level by the Department of Social
Services, Division of Health.
height and weight
hemoglobin or hematocrit levels
The Division of Health contracts with county health
head circumference (only on infants under 12 months)
departments and health providers to operate the WIC
program on the local level.
